Family days out Essex

Outdoor photos two boys

A family day out in Essex is the perfect way to have fun and have your family photos captured.

Here is my list of top activities for a family day spent in Essex and would also be a great place for your family photos.

Children naturally want to play and explore and don’t want to be restricted or confined. I love the variety that outdoor photography gives – different backdrops as well as space for children to run around and allow me to capture their childhood with a relaxed and authentic approach.

I have captured families in a number of different locations in Essex and I can help you decide which location is best for you and your family whether it is to be in Chelmsford or in and around Essex.

Here are my top 5 favourite Essex locations.

Woodlands & Country Estates

As an Essex family photographer, I am very lucky that Essex has so many amazing parks and country estates.

Lush greens, high grass, sunflowers, patches of forests, fun adventure playgrounds and wildflowers. Like Hylands Park, Mark’s Hall, Danbury Country Park, Admirals Park etc. All offering an amazing backdrop for natural and relaxed family portraits.

From my experience, children tend to be happier in parks, where they can run around and explore. These sessions are more relaxed and loose and we can plan together different activities for the children to enjoy.

Hylands Estate is one of my favourite parks in Essex to meet for family sessions as it offers the best of both worlds – a spectacular woodland area as well as a children’s play area.

One of my favourite areas in this park is the the Pleasure Gardens which offer colourful traditional and contemporary flower areas which provide the perfect backdrop for family photos.

Father and daughter photoshoot Hylands Park

Situated just a couple of miles from the heart of Chelmsford, the venue offers quick transport links to London, Bishop Stortford, B etc making it ideal for families to have a wonderful family photoshoot and a day out after the session to make the most of the day.

Another favourite park of mine is Danbury County Park – I have found this park to be one that changes every season and offers a variety of backgrounds depending on the season. From golden yellow long grass in the summer months to the most beautiful red and yellow leaves for the autumn months.

Writtle Sunflower Fields

Writtle Sunflowers is part of a family run farming business that has now been selling flowers and brightening homes for over ten years.

They sell directly to the public from their field just outside of Chelmsford – sunflowers by the bunch and pick-your-own zinnias, cornflowers and larkspur.

The fields offer a wonderful background for family portraits – pick between sunflowers or wildflowers or both. A great place to spend a an hour or two to take photos and pick your own selection of flowers to brighten up your home.

What’s extra special about this place is that the owners kindly hire out the fields to photographer to hire privately in the evenings.

I have had a wonderful time this year capturing a number of families with sunset evening shoots which offer privacy and to capture family photos in the golden evening light.

Lathcoats Farm

Fruit picking at Lathcoats Fruit Farm is one of my family’s favourite past times and when summer rolls around, we always try to make a trip over. It is also makes a beautiful backdrop to capture family photography. The pops of colours from the red strawberries and apples add brightness and colour to the greens and browns from the farm.

Beach Huts

Whats more fun then spending a day at the beach, a place where kids will smile no matter what as there is always the promise of chips and ice-creme. West Mersea is famous for it’s pretty pastel beach huts that create such a lovely backdrop for family photos.
The Beach, Frinton-on-Sea is another option, with its wide sandy beach, has gone out of its way to remain as uncommercialised as possible and maintain its reputation as a quiet family resort. To the rear of the beach is an extensive promenade, much of which is lined with colourful, old-fashioned beach huts.

Your Home

If you have great light and a place to snuggle up then you really don’t need to leave your house at all. Get the kettle going, I’m coming over!

In-home sessions can be quite special and sentimental to you as a family.

So many of your most special memories are made right under the roof of your own home so why not document some more?

This is especially a good location for new parents who find leaving the house more stressful than fun.

You and your family are most comfortable at home and you have designed and styled your home to reflect you so why leave?
